Services for Shirley Unger Carthan of Tchula will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at S.V. Marshall Elementary School in Tchula.
Mrs. Carthan, 64, died Sunday, March 17, 2019, in Greenwood.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Mississippi Valley State University. She was co-pastor of Good Samarian Ecumenical Church, a retired teacher and a self-employed entrepreneur. Her hobbies included reading the Bible, cooking, and helping the poor, needy and oppressed people in her area. She was a mentor, prayer partner and mother figure to many.
She is survived by her husband, Eddie J. Carthan of Tchula; four children, Cissye L. Carthan of Jackson, Neketa G. Watson of Fort Myers, Florida, Edelia J. Carthan of Byram and Shermel R. Carthan of Tchula; two grandchildren, Edetric J. Carthan of Byram and Carthan Terry of Jackson; six sisters, Lizzie Pearl Sanders of Rockford, Illinois, Gladys Wise of Milwaukee, Martha Dougherty of Joliet, Illinois, Blanche Fleming and Bessie Ward, both of Goodman, and Evelyna Washington of Lockport, Illinois; two brothers, Willie Unger of Rockford, Illinois, and Lee Unger of Jackson; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Good Samaritan Ecumenical Church in Tchula.
Joe Anderson will officiate at the services.
Byas Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Burial will be in Zion City Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
