GRENADA — A Grenada man is dead after being shot in the head multiple times.

Grenada County Sheriff’s Investigator Josh Dale tells WTVA-TV that deputies were called Saturday to a home north of Grenada and found 46-year-old Jeff Counts dead from gunshot wounds.

Deputies arrested 18-year-old Gage Atkinson at the scene and charged him with murder. Dale said Counts, Atkinson and two others were shooting at targets in the home’s backyard.

According to Dale, the sheriff’s department is investigating the shooting as a domestic-related incident.

“Gage is the son of the victim’s fiancee,” Dale told the Grenada Star.

Counts’ body was to be sent to the state Crime Lab in Pearl for an autopsy.

A $500,000 bond was set for Atkinson Monday morning. He is being held at the Grenada County Jail, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

Grenada County Sheriff Alton Strider told the Grenada newspaper that officers are interviewing witnesses and still trying to piece together what happened.

“The shooting took place at an old house,” Strider said. “Neither the victim nor the suspect lived there. They were all back there shooting rifles. Nobody living in that house. It didn’t even have electricity.”

Strider told the newspaper that the backyard was heavily wooded and the group was practicing.

He said Counts worked for years as a salesman with Kirk Auto Co.

Shane Harrison, a longtime co-worker at Kirk, told the newspaper he last saw Counts on Saturday before going home from work.

“I gave him a bear hug,” Harrison said. “He was just that type of guy — well-liked and just super nice.”
